SSS bbq.

A big thank you to all who headed down to the bbq pit this afternoon for a time of free food and great company! Thank you for braving the rain and enthusiastically eating all the food we prepared.

See, as promised, NOT JUST SAUSAGES at bbq this time around. We had chicken burger patties, VEGIE burgers (not enough vegetarians to finish them up though) and yummy mushroom and onions fried together! Haha I'm sure the new menu caught many by surprise but hey, a little excitement is all we need to keep us going :)

For those who didn't manage to come for the bbq, YOU MISSED GREAT ACTION! (Wondering what that's about? Ask those who came, they would have heard some story about something catching fire and a flame as high as tree coming up. It was EXTREEEEEEEME!)

The bbq marks the end of the year of events for SSS. But don't worry, more to come when the year begins again next year. Keep the comments and feedback coming.

Study hard, drink more water and do well for the exams!

Finally, a new post!

Hey all! Sorry for the lag in posts. Oops. Anyway, just a reminder that the end of semester BBQ is just round the corner!

Horse Riding

Hey there!

I'm here to revive this dying blog!

Recently, we've had a horse riding trip on the 25th of September and I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who turned up for it. The trip wouldn't be successful without you guys!

Anyway, we all met at 845am at southern cross to take the V-line to Wallan. Interesting eh? I bet most Singaporeans would not know of Vline. It's actually a train service which caters to people living further than the metropolitan train stations and hence goes beyond the stations of broadmeadows, lilydale etc etc. Anyway, we alighted at Wallan and transport was provided from the train station to the ranch. We arrived at Pretty Sally Riding Ranch, given helmets and to told to 'SUIT UP'. Ok, I was just kidding about that last part.

After settling all the admin detail, they proceeded to assign us different horses. My horse's name is 'Ace' and he was truly a 100m star but I'm getting ahead of myself here. We started to walk along the trail into the forest and over the valleys. We saw a spectecular view but it wasn't enough. Just when I thought we were going to be walking for the next 1.5 hour, they stopped at the base of a slope and you could tell that the horses were starting to get real frisky. Next thing we knew, we were galloping up the hill! Ok, maybe cantering but it was still pretty fast. Thing about my horse was after the initial run, it subsquently became faster and faster, leaving the others in the distance. It nearly gave me a heart attack. Anyway, we basically walked/cantered/walked/cantered all the way back to the ranch. Afterwards, we were treated to a delicious BBQ of hash browns, sausages and beef! Overall, a very satisfying experience well worth every dollar I paid!

Snowbound07!

Hey guys! We know most of you are bogged with mid-semester tests and a whole pile of essays waiting to be handed in before the break. But don't forget about SNOWBOUND 07! A Dinosaur in the Milo!?

Oh, a Milo dinosaur is actually Milo with a dinosaur inside. As you drink it, you'll find a dinosaur in it.

Would he believe you?

Well, he almost did. Heh heh.


And thank you for buying all those lovely, HEALTHY pisang goreng during FoN. They went like hotcakes man! One of them even requested that we added the crumbs onto his plate of banana fritters.

LOL!

Festival of Nations.

Craving for some truly Singaporean food?

Oooh and a little, DID YOU KNOW?

Teh Tarik Muslim Restaurant in Sembawang Road (formerly known as A&A Restaurant) claimed to have invented Teh-cino and Milo Dinosaur 10 years ago.... Teh-cino is pulled milk with a layer of tea on top and Milo Dinosaur is a Milo drink topped with a heap of Milo powder. Milo Godzilla (Milo drink topped with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream) was supposedly created in Al-Azhar Eating Restaurant in Upper Bukit Timah shortly after. There are also other Singaporean inventions - Neslo (Nescafe coffee mixed with Milo), Almond Susu (almond powder mixed with milk) and even Milo Eruption (milk topped with a heap of Milo powder).

Sinking feeling along Telok Blangah Road.

A section of Telok Blangah Road sank by about 20cm on Saturday evening, creating a depression measuring 7m by 7m.

The sunken section, spanning two lanes, is near the junction of Telok Blangah and Alexandra Road, close to the Port of Singapore Authority Building.

The affected stretch of road is actually a temporary diversionary route created to facilitate the construction of the future Labrador MRT station. Traffic had to be diverted after the sinking occurred at 9.25pm.
No vehicles were damaged in the incident. Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesman Naleeza Ebrahim attributed the ground settlement to the work on the MRT station, which is part of the future Circle Line.

It was an anticipated event, she said. The LTA had planned to divert traffic back to the original Telok Blangah Road ahead of the sinking, but the ground settlement happened earlier than expected. 'We would like to assure the public that there is no need to be alarmed about it,'she said. Incidents of ground settlement are not uncommon and structures around the depression are safe, she added.

Circulars were sent out last Tuesday informing residents in the area to expect a traffic diversion as a result of the work.

Falls Creek Ski Trip!

WHAT A FUN TIME SKIING IN FALLS CREEK!!!

First day (10 Aug):

Departed at Melb 2am in the morning! Spent 5 hrs on the bus, trying to catch some sleep but the seats dont recline and the contour doesnt fit my short body. Finally when we reached Falls Creek at 730am, it was freezing cold! Strong winds, foggy skies, and rain. Not good at all, because only 1 lift (Gully lift) was open.

After settling down at Halley's Lodge (many thanks to our AO who was so stressed out organising everything), we went to get fitted for skis and snowboards and off we went to attack the slopes! It was tremendously difficult to walk with the boots.



Today we conquered (without lessons so kudos to us for figuring out most things ourselves through practice and observation) blue slope Final Muster and the practice slope :) Kept on falling down but that was part of the fun! When you dare to fall, you learn faster! I fell really badly once coz the slope was too steep and I hadnt learnt how to control my fall. Almost went down into the cordoned off danger area. And sometimes it is those pple who you are trying to swerve that makes u fall!

Dinner was a filling 3 course meal! 2 choices of entree (I had pumpkin soup on first day and brocolli bacon soup on the second) and 2 choices of main (grilled fish for me on first day and steak on the second) and 2 choices of sweets (and knowing me I went for cheesecake and mille fleur with ice cream!). Immediately after that stomach distending meal everyone just went to sleep, at 9pm!! Terribly unhealthy, and then on waking at 730am we had another heavy meal of breakfast (makes no sense when we eat so much all together and then starve the whole day) of bacon eggs and baked beans, AND unlimited toast with spreads and cornflakes with milk! Naturally I ate everything too.



Second day (11 Aug):

The weather was unbearably cold with the rain and wind and mist. I was freezing literally the whole day, and it doesnt help when your soaked underneath ur WATERPROOF clothes and gloves. But at least ALL the lifts were open! We went to do the Wombat's Ramble (green). I went down the wrong way to Panoroma (green) and ended up at the bottom of Drover's Dream Lift. And my friends were at the other side! I felt so lost, and I re-did Panorama again to find them.


This time I fell down hard and hit my head on the pole and it hurt like crazy. (Now I have a bump on my head). Finally I saw them in a restaurant when I went inside to cure my frostbitten fingers. We did more wombat's ramble (fantastic scenery) till we couldnt take the cold any longer.

Third day (12 Aug):

HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY TO ME! God blessed us with a sunny day with perfect snow and all! We had credit from Friday's closure of lifts to use for the day, and boy did we attack all the slopes we could!


We did the blue runs, Highway 83 and Main Street (that first run I did, the slope became so unexpectedly steep and I fell badly again), and we totally funned ourselves to death. Pity we had to leave by 4. At the end of the ski trip, I had learnt to slow down and negotiate uneven bumps and ski on flat ground (its tough). No muscle aches so far, and I would definitely go skiing again!

Details for the annual International Ball are finally here!

'Snowbound 2007', co-organized by Singapore Students' Society and the International Engineering Students' Society, promises to be another spectacular event featuring a snow/ice theme with Chill On Ice Bar (Melbourne's FIRST and ONLY ice bar!) as the after party venue.

At only $75, you are ensured a cocktail reception(including finger food), a 3-course meal, free flow of beverages both alcoholic and non (at the ballroom), entry to Ice Bar (normally costing $30), and an unforgettable, unique icy experience!

Games Day!

As the days get warmer (*crosses fingers), we thought that it'd be nice to come together and engage in some healthy activities.

We'll be playing touch rugby and ultimate frisbee. WOOHOOO!

Don't worry if you don't know the game, haven't touched a rugby ball before, can't run for more than 10 seconds, etc. As long as you have the desire to learn and you want to have an afternoon of fun, SEARCH NO FURTHER!

NDP BASH!

Hey guys, it's Lionel here and I'm sorry for the late post. Needed 1 day to get over the hang over, haha. Anyway, I'm sure everyone has heard about the NDP bash SSS had this week over at velour. It was fantastic! I'm sure everybody enjoyed themselves tremendously despite the technical difficulties we had with the transmission of the NDP. Sorry guys, we're truly really sorry about that! If we could've tested the system beforehand, we would've but alas, our partners over in singapore might not have been as enthusiastic about the event as us. We'd like to apologize to those who specifically came for the NDP segment, we'll take this as a lesson and learn from it.
Anyway, the place was super packed that night and it warms my heart to see the support we had for this event. You guys were truly the life of the whole occasion. You guys deserve a round of applause. (Clapx12)
So, doors were open at 8pm and a steady stream of 'on' NDP supporters started coming in. As everybody acclamatised themselves to the place, our beloved MC, Julius, kicked things off with an icebreaker! It was the 'couple' game where everyone, who had a slip of a name, had to find the respective partner of that name. Meanwhile, the comm members were busy preping the NDP and food which was to be served next. Finger foods such as spring rolls, curry puffs and fishballs were distributed to satisfy the hungry crowd. Don't think we didn't know that food was one of the draws of the event!
So, I shall skip the obvious slight, minor, miniscule, so-small-that-it's-not-worth-mentioning hiccup we had with NDP and move on the skulling. It was the second game of the night and we had 5 enthusiastic groups on stage, competing in their drinking skills. After a long arduous stretch of drinking, we had winner! Unfortunately, the winners decided that they shouldn't horde the drinks to themselves and wanted to share it with the crowd. The crowd apparently violently rejected their kindness by moving a distance away while they continue to spew forth their blessings to the masses.
Last but not least, we had the best dressed competition! Our very fashion judges, which comprised of me, ya qi, su san and gen, walked through the crowd in search of someone worthy of holding the crown this year. So, it was a hard fought battle between the comm members on who should hold this honour and finally it was settled on this couple. Haha, sorry guys, very difficult to explain using words, I'll try to post the pics up as soon as possible.
So, after that, it was mambo! The crowd really started to get into it, especially with our resident DJ spinning titles from blur and such. The rest is history!
So, once again guys, Thanks for the support! This really couldn't have been possible without you.

National Day - Make A Statement!

To celebrate Singapore's upcoming 42nd birthday, Tampines North Sun Plaza RC members have put up flags in the shape of a big '42' for National Day on Aug 9.

Using 30 flags, and taking about 10 hours, four people meticulously strung up these flags on Block 410 in Tampines. They also plan to enlist the help of neighbouring residents to put up more flags as well as lights by the end of this week.
