Pregnant Zoe dropped by MediaCorp.

CALDECOTT queen Zoe Tay's contract with MediaCorp has been suspended.

Ms Tay, who is seven months pregnant, said that the company's new policy is to suspend the contracts of actresses who are pregnant. The contracts will be re-instated when they returned to work.

Chinese evening newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported that the 39-year-old actress feels troubled about the situation as she currently has no income.

This was not the case in 2004 when Ms Tay was pregnant with her first child.

During her first pregnancy, she hosted an infotainment programme educating women on the dos-and-don'ts when having a baby.

Ms Tay's second child is due in October

They are looking to recruit overseas post docs AND encourage Singapore graduates/PhD students in their final year of studies to return to Singapore to join A*STAR!

Feel Indecisive No More!

Ever felt uncertain about what to drink when you are at the food court or hawker centre?
Should I get kopi peng? Oh wait, I had that in the morning.
How about Coke? No no no, that one to wash toilet bowl one.
Oh hmmm.. Qoo? Milo Dinosaur?

"Eh, quickly la. Make up your mind! I'm going to buy drinks now!" yells your friend.

"Aiyah, okay okay. Whatever lah," you reply.

And she trots back to you almost instantly, with this.

Whatever??? Whatever is a DRINK!?

Ahhh! Just a few months away from home and they came up with a drink named Whatever?
Amazing. Just goes to show how creative some people can get.

Another day, you met up with another friend. This time you felt smarter.
YOU'D be the one volunteering to get the drinks.

"Hey! I'm gonna get drinks. Do you want anything?" you asked.

Your friend replies,"No no. I don't want anything. Get me iced lemon tea please."

"?!" you exclaimed.

Anything?!!

National Day and Me.

It was really one of those “Tio 4-D” moments in Sec3 when my principal announced over the PA system.

“OK Guys this year we will be doing NDP. Trainings will start on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You will be exempted from classes on those days and the mid year exams are canceled”

Wah!! Ho say liao!

National Day never really had any significance to me.All along it was just an excuse to get a school holiday, usually spent bumming at home or in a LAN shop playing games. But over the course of that year I came to appreciate the great nationalistic exercise that is NDP. At the end of it , we really felt sad when it was over.

Of course the free KFC helped a lot too. Also the chicks really dug it when I told them…

“I’m performing in this year’s NDP. I’ve got 2 tickets baby. Wanna come watch me?”

Ok maybe that’s a little over the top, but I did try that trick on a girl I fancied. Eh it worked ok. Dun play play.

(Of course I heard the army people assigned to babysit us weren’t too happy. I even overheard one of them saying “NNBCCB the rest tio the Cheerleaders we tio this boy’s school….”)

Then JC came and it wasn’t cool to be patriotic. C’mon everyone knows the chap standing at assembly singing the National Anthem at the top of his voice with his hand over his heart and tears running from his eyes is a few taupok short of a rojak. National Days were spent at Sentosa. (Now got girls so must go Sentosa mah…then still go chiong LAN shop meh?)

And it wasn’t cool get a Singapore flag tattooed on your bicep, as I found out soon enough.(Stick on tattoo la…you think I so hiong?)

In army I was once again involved in NDP for both my years in NS. Weekends wasted and no off days given. Endless rehearsals. Annoying organizers who kept changing the plans at the last moment. NO CHEERLEADERS! Enough to drive any grown man insane. The only comfort was the unlimited boxes of KFC and Pizza Hut but we soon learned to stay away from those. Gives you very bad laosai. Not ordinary laosai. High power projectile laosai , a la the scene in The Exorcist with the projectile vomiting girl.

This year, my first year away from home as the 9^th of August comes round the corner, I feel myself overcome with a strange sense of longing. What is it about being overseas that makes one watching the National Day Parade with its cheesy displays and poorly disguised propaganda songs?

Missing August 9^ths spent with my family having dinner and catching the NDP on TV. An Ipod full of NDP songs that I swore I’d never ever listen to. A Singapore flag tattooed on my left buttcheek.(Come find me and I’ll tell you if I’m lying or not.)

Committee Dinner.

The committee met up today for dinner at Mark's Place to catch up, bond and discuss about upcoming activities.

Good ol' Mark's Place is located at the corner of Swanston Street and Grattan Street. And listen up people! This is what you should order, don't say we didn't mention! Tangy chicken pizza, tangy chicken pizza and tangy chicken pizza! In fact, guess how many tangy chicken pizzas we ordered on top of other food?

FOUR LARGE PIZZAS! It totally rocks!

Okay, you can't really see the tangy chicken here, but take our word for it!

All of us had a good chat, making fun of our school days back in Singapore, or army days in NS, some Aussie culture that we have not familiarised ourselves with, etc. Sharing silly truly Singaporean jokes and using the lahs, mehs and walaus like nobody's business! All these while having TANGY CHICKEN PIZZA!

And watch out for National Day Celebrations 2007! We intensively discussed it through the night, so watch out for the details coming up soon! Nothing but mind-blowing, we assure you!

Singapore Channel 8 Drama

Good day fellow Singaporeans,

I hope you forgive my indulgence in this post as what I'll be talking about is the ongoing Singapore Drama 'Honour and Passion' aka 'Bao Jia Wei Guo'. For those of you who's just been back from Singapore, you probably know what I'm talking about.. or maybe not. Anyway, here's a youtube link to the user who's decided to upload various episodes.

Just a note of caution of all the guys out there who have served NS, I urge you not to take this seriously as this is probably the worst depiction of what the Army would be like. I must admit, this drama could seriously cause an apoplexy for any male and you could find yourself spasming on the ground before you know it. I mean Pierre Png's chinese could give you nightmares and scare kids into eating their veges but just the idea of people falling to the ground when blanks are being fired is enough to send one normal Singaporean male into a fit of hysteria.

So, yes be careful. It's not good to have our fellow Singaporeans collapsing all over the place NOT due to the cold around. Especially when SSS events are just around the corner.

In any case, I guess the subtitles division in channel 8 are getting from worse to worsER. I mean, check this line out from episode 1.

Clubs & Societies Expo.

To all those who braved the strong winds and blistering cold last Tuesday to visit the Clubs & Societies booths, KUDOS TO YOU!

We had 'fun' at our SSS booth, sitting, waiting and wishing through the VERY strong winds and EXTREMELY blistering cold for fresh blood! I'm sure you guys had more fun walking around to marvel at clubs like More Beer!, Juggling and Chocolate Lovers'!

Of course, not forgetting SSS! We had a really big banner beside our booth, but it was hard to navigate around the area, I'd say. The clubs were made to pack together because we had to be clustered within the shelter. Nevertheless, I'm sure that day was a great eye-opener!

For those who have come down, you would have met three of the new committee members. Firstly, our Gen Gen! Haha Genevieve! She's our club's secretary. Also, you would have met Lionel and I! Your friendly activities officers! :) You'll see a lot of us really soon as you turn up for activities.

Do approach us if you have any feedback, or would just like to ask us about our day, or just want to see some familiar faces using the all-time-favourite SINGLISH!

This is where we begin.

Hey all!
Semester 2 just kicked off on Monday, 23rd July.
I believe it's what we make off our time that makes us who we are.
So as we spend our university lives in this foreign land, let us take heart that there are other Singaporeans by our side, running this same race with us.
SSS is a great place to start, the sanctuary we run to when life gets us down.
